Our Heroes return from Brakebills with a spell powerful enough to kill The Beast, only to find themselves waylaid by an ancient curse. Julia, meanwhile, conspires with Marina and The Beast to lure Reynard into a trap but doubts as to whether he will live up to his end of the bargain and if they can trust him along the way. Penny realizes that all the thrones in Fillory are cursed when he notices strange behavior from Quentin, Eliot, Alice and Margo.
